MITASU e-TRANSAXLE MV Fluid: Fluids for modern Electric Vehicles and Hybrids are not as simple as they seem

18 December 2025

Previous-generation electric vehicle and hybrid transmissions made do with "regular," typically low-viscosity ATFs, but the latest generation of electrified vehicles increasingly require specialized products. Is this truly due to the increased performance of the vehicles, or is it more of a marketing ploy?

If you look at hybrids from the early 20th century, such as the Toyota Prius NHW11 and Honda Insight ZE1, as well as EVs from the late 20th century, such as the Nissan Leaf ZE0 and Mitsubishi i-MiEV HA3/4, you'll see they all share a low powertrain output. Even the performance figures of the first-generation Tesla Roadster, which looked defiantly powerful compared to its electric contemporaries, are now considered "very modest".

The growing popularity of electric vehicles has created new demands on them. This means long range, fast charging, and high power output. To meet these new challenges, automakers have had to resort to 800- and even 900-volt powertrain architectures. How has this affected the performance of transmission fluids for modern electric vehicles, some models of which now exceed 1,500 hp?

∙ Long range = low transmission fluid viscosity to reduce losses
∙ High power and torque = high extreme-pressure and anti-wear properties to protect the transmission
∙ High voltage and current = resistance to electrical breakdown and high volume fluid resistivity

All these characteristics are achieved by the company's new product, MJ-361. MITASU e-TRANSAXLE MV Fluid 100% Synthetic is a low-viscosity, multi-purpose transmission fluid for the latest generation of electric and hybrid vehicles, formulated from a synthetic base oil and a unique additive package. A key feature of this fluid is its versatility: it is designed for use in electric transmissions equipped with direct ("wet") and indirect ("dry") cooling motors installed in various types of hybrid and electric vehicles, including those with high-voltage architectures, where the manufacturer specifies the use of specialized low-viscosity, high-protection fluids such as TESLA EDF-2, HONDA ULTRA HEVF-Type 1.0, TOYOTA e-Transaxle Fluid TE, and many others.

MITASU e-TRANSAXLE MV Fluid 100% Synthetic provides:
∙ Effective heat dissipation
∙ High volume resistivity
∙ Excellent extreme pressure properties
∙ Compatibility with non-ferrous metals and seal materials
∙ Stable performance properties over a wide temperature range

The addition of MJ-361 to the MITASU OIL product line. MITASU e-TRANSAXLE MV Fluid 100% Synthetic provides owners of modern electric and hybrid vehicles with the quality product they need for routine maintenance.

MITASU – Quality. Always.
